Interesting topic Michael, though you failed to write about the step of meeting with the client to tell them you can no longer do their work. That is critical.

Augustine you make a totally fair and good point. I didn’t cover that because I sort of felt that what you would say in that meeting was that you did not feel you could give the project the attention it deserved – saving face and telling the client that their project is important – and that you had someone in mind who would be well suited to the task. The meeting could go a number of ways from there but up front that is about as good a game plan as you can have going in.
